Meet Catherine Henry…

Grammar School Art Teacher

Catherine Henry obtained her college degrees from Hiram College and Akron University, then taught in the Cleveland and Cincinnati areas. She has had the privilege of teaching in various capacities including preschool, elementary, special education, homeschooling, and even private art lessons. One of her favorite aspects of “doing art” with children is helping them expand their own artistic abilities by teaching and demonstrating basic elements and techniques while providing them access to a variety of art materials and tools.

A few highlights of Mrs. Henry’s teaching and artistic career have been combining art with nature, food, and recycled materials. For example, during a week-long nature day camp, children dug clay from stream beds and used it for modeling sculptures. Another favorite was going on silent hikes, using only our sense of sight to find so many different patterns in nature, then creating art projects from them.

Mrs. Henry has hosted workshops demonstrating printing, weaving, and 3-dimensional art projects with recycled materials. Being a part of CCA has been such a joy for her and she has enjoyed watching the children of CCA grow in their art skills as they put into practice what was learned during various art lessons.

On a personal note, Catherine and her husband, have a son named Matthew and they have called Roanoke home since 1993. She spent time homeschooling Matthew during his Grammar School years. The Henry family worships at Church of the Holy Spirit.
